With Invisalign’s rise in popularity, many people know that Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces. But how does the Invisalign treatment work? Is it right for you? Your Bowie, MD dentist at Omni Dental Group can help you decide the best way to straighten your teeth.

Invisalign uses clear aligner trays worn in succession to move the teeth. Unlike with traditional braces, no metal wires or brackets are Invisalignnecessary. Invisalign uses positive pressure applied to the teeth, moving them into their final positions. Depending on your situation, small tooth colored bumps called attachments may be placed onto the teeth. Attachments allow some teeth to move more than others.

Before Invisalign
First, you should consult with your dentist to determine if Invisalign is right for you. At an initial consultation appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth, mouth and jaw. He or she may take x-rays to determine that there is no decay or other problems within the teeth. If your dentist finds any problems, they normally need to be resolved before you start your treatment.

You and your dentist will come up with an idea of the results you want to see and go over the process of Invisalign together. Now is your time to ask any questions or voice any concerns you have. Invisalign creates a video based on molds of your teeth showing exactly how your teeth will move during treatment. Once you approve the video, a dental laboratory creates your aligner trays and delivers them to your dentist.

During Invisalign
Your treatment is as easy as remembering to wear your aligner trays. The next tray in the series is worn according to your treatment plan. Most patients see their dentist for a checkup about every six weeks. Your commitment to wearing your aligners determines your results. It is crucial to the treatment that you wear the trays for about 22 hours a day. The extra hours account for removing your aligner trays to eat and brush, or for a special occasion. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day and after meals. Your aligner trays must also be cleaned twice a day.
