Do you have a tooth damaged by decay or infection? Has your tooth been restored several times and may fracture? At Omni Dental Group your Bowie family dentist uses porcelain crowns to breathe new life into weak teeth. Dr. Siamak Aalemansour, Dr. Fariborz Baik, or Dr. Sherwin Esfandiari perform the entire treatment in their Bowie MD office.

Preserve natural teeth

That's the goal of your Bowie family dentist. We can't say that an extraction is never an option, but when possible, your dentist will do all he can to preserve the tooth structure, biting, chewing, clear speech, and strong jaw bone that nature intended.

You may need a dental crown

Just what is a dental crown? It's a jacket of medical-grade porcelain which is precisely made and fit to support and completely cover your weak tooth. The ceramic cap looks like a natural tooth and blends right in with its neighbors.

Your Bowie family dentist may advise a crown on a front tooth, back tooth, or anywhere in between. Once cemented in place, a crown withstands the incredible forces exerted by biting and chewing.

Additionally, your Bowie family dentist places crowns to secure bridgework and restore today's most successful tooth replacement, the dental implant. In short, a porcelain crown is very versatile.

The treatment

If your dentist wishes to pursue a crown, he'll examine your tooth carefully--both visually and with digital X-rays. If the tooth is a good candidate, he'll numb it and reduce its size and shape so the crown fits securely.

Also, he removes the damaged portions. Some teeth require root canal therapy to extract diseased interior pulp before crown placement. In either case, you may wear a temporary, or provisional, crown until your permanent one is ready.

Afterward, your mouth will adjust quickly to your new crown. Simply brush and floss as you normally do, and see your family dentist in his Bowie office twice a year for cleanings and check-ups. He'll examine that crown, its margins, and surrounding teeth and gums to be sure all is well.

Life with your dental crown

Enjoy your restored tooth, but avoid tartar build-up and the excessive stresses of teeth clenching, hard foods (peanut brittle or ice), or biting your fingernails. These forces could dislodge or fracture your crown.

Remember, while a crown is a reasonable facsimile of your natural tooth, its porcelain cannot flex as real enamel can. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) states that this relative rigidity makes crowns susceptible to fracture if abused.
