Have you or a loved one recently experienced a dental emergency? A throbbing toothache, a knocked-out tooth, a lost filling—they can allDental_Emergency be frightening. Fortunately, your family dentists here at Omni Dental Group in Bowie, MD, are to help you through these crises and protect your smile!

What is a dental emergency?

It's any oral health issue that requires immediate action, and in these situations, it is important to stay calm—take first things first. For instance, an oral laceration may require direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to quell bleeding. In another example, if someone loses a filling, chips a tooth, or cracks a crown, they must make sure to gather all of the pieces and take them to our office in Bowie.

In any dental emergency, communication with our family dentists, Dr. Baik, Dr. Esfandiari, or Dr. Aalemansour, is critical. They'll quickly and kindly tell you how to stabilize the urgent condition and get you into the office for treatment as necessary. Furthermore, because our team is made of family dentists, this care can be supplied to people of all ages.

Examples of dental emergencies and what you can do

  • Avulsed Tooth: Rinse a knocked-out tooth with clear water. Replant it, roots down, into the empty socket and hold it there while making the trek to Omni Dental Group. Most avulsed teeth survive and function well if put back in place within just a few minutes of injury, however, if you cannot put the tooth into the socket, place it between the cheek and gums, or in a sealed container with water, milk, or over the counter tooth preservative.
  • Chipped/Cracked Tooth, Filling, or Crown: Save the fragments, and take them to your family dentist. They may be bonded back in place, or as needed, the doctor may restore the tooth with composite resin or a new crown.
  • Toothache Ice the jaw, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off, to reduce pain and swelling. Additionally, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers according to package directions, and call Omni Dental Group for an appointment.

Would you like to help your child reduce their risk of tooth decay? Read on to learn how sealants offered by your Bowie, MD, family dentists, Drs. Siamak Aalemansour, Fariborz Baik, and Sherwin Esfandiari, can help your son or daughter avoid cavities!

Why do children need sealants?

The tiny pits and grooves in your child's pre-molars and molars are prone to collecting plaque, making them a common site for cavities. Even if your child brushes thoroughly, it may not be possible for them to remove plaque completely, as it's difficult to reach the small grooves with toothbrush bristles. Furthermore, your child's newly erupted pre-molars and molars aren't quite as strong as yours and are more susceptible to decay.

Fortunately, sealants offer excellent protection for these teeth. Made of clear plastic resin, sealants fill in those tumultuous pits and grooves, preventing plaque from building up on the chewing surfaces.

How effective are sealants?

Sealants offer a proven way to protect your kids from cavities. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that sealants prevent 80 percent of cavities in the back teeth.

How are sealants applied to teeth?

Applying sealants to the back teeth is quick and painless. After cleaning the teeth in question, your Bowie dentist will apply an etching solution that will help the liquid solution adhere to the chewing surfaces. He'll then brush on the sealants before hardening them with a curing light—a process that only takes a few minutes.

How long will the sealants last?

Sealants will protect your child's teeth for as long as 10 years. During checkups, the dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them if they've worn away or chipped. Sealants are more likely to wear away if your child grinds or clenches their teeth at night. In these cases, wearing a custom-made mouthguard provided by your dentist will not only keep the sealants in good condition, but it will also prevent tooth damage.

What are tooth-colored dental fillings?

Fillings are a safe and affordable dental treatment that restores the integrity of teeth, according to the American Dental Association.

Why are tooth-colored dental fillings important?

There's a cosmetic and restorative benefit to tooth-colored fillings. Tooth-colored fillings match the rest of your teeth so no one will know you have fillings when you smile. Gone are the days when silver and gold fillings ruined smiles. Your Bowie family dentists also provide this treatment for children.

What are fillings made of and what are some of their other advantages?

Fillings are made of composite resins, or white fillings, that are meant to be aesthetically appealing. The mixture of acrylic resin and finely ground glass-like material produce the tooth-colored filling that blends with the rest of your teeth.

  1. They beautify the smile.
  2. They restore bite and chewing function.
  3. They protect teeth from decay.
  4. They repair worn or damaged teeth.

How do you care for tooth-colored fillings?

  • Brush your teeth twice a day, at the very least
  • Floss once a day, before bed
  • Wear mouth guards if you have a habit of teeth grinding while sleeping

Could you benefit from getting clear braces in Bowie, MD?

It’s never too late to get a beautiful smile. Even if you never had braces as a child, this doesn’t mean that you can’t get braces as an adult. In fact, there is no age or expiration date on when someone can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Of course, as you get older it’s natural to want a treatment that will fit into your lifestyle and won’t be as obvious to those around you. This is why our Bowie, MD, dentists, Dr. Siamak Aalemansour, Dr. Fariborz Baik, and Dr. Sherwin Esfandiari, are pleased to offer Invisalign.

How does Invisalign work?

Instead of traditional braces, which shift teeth by using a bracket-and-wire system that is bonded to the front of your teeth, Invisalign uses different kinds of clear retainer-like devices that can move teeth into their ideal position.

Each aligner is custom-made to the measurements of your teeth and for addressing the problem or problems you wish to correct with this nearly invisible orthodontic system. Invisalign boasts a metal-free way to straighten your smile.

Who can benefit from Invisalign?

Many patients’ smiles could benefit from the Invisalign treatment offered here at our Bowie, MD, office. Are you wondering if you could be one of them?

During your consultation, we will sit down with you to discuss your treatment goals in order to make sure that Invisalign is the best approach. After all, Invisalign is able to correct a variety of simple and more complex issues, but it won’t be able to treat all problems. You may benefit from Invisalign if you have,

  • Crowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Gapped teeth
  • Open bite

If you are dealing with one or more of these issues then Invisalign may be right for you!

Your Age

We believe that you should have the smile you want no matter your age. This means that most older teens and adults are ideal candidates for Invisalign. Of course, in order for aligners to fit properly and to provide results, teeth need to have fully matured. This means that children and young teens aren’t ideal candidates for Invisalign because their teeth are still growing.

Your Commitment to Treatment

One benefit of getting Invisalign is that aligners are removable, which means you can remove them before eating and brushing your teeth; however, you still want to wear your aligners as much as possible throughout the day so you can actually get results. If you may be tempted to remove your aligners quite regularly then this may not be the best treatment option for you.
